After a number of users suffered from a fraudulent nonfungible token (NFT) sale on Discord server of the Phantom Galaxies blockchain game, its owners, Animoca Brands and Blowfish Studios, have promised to repay 265 ETH worth around $1.1 million stolen by the scammers.
The event in question occurred on November 19 on the Phantom Galaxies Discord server with 94,000 members. Hackers gained control over the server using a malware bot that compromised the administrator’s account. After that, scammers promised users to take part in a “stealth” NFT sale, using the official announcement channel. In a three hours period, 1571 of fake transactions occurred.
As the minting of non-existent NFTs happened on a fraudulent platform, users were charged a 0.1 ETH fee for each minted NFT.
Animoca Brands is a Hong Kong based gaming and venture capital company. Aside from Blowfish Studios it also lists The Sandbox project among its subsidiaries.
